Can a Sidewall Puncture Be Repaired?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

No. A puncture in the sidewall cannot be safely repaired. British Standard BS AU 159 limits repairs to the minor repair area of the tread, described by TyreSafe as the central three-quarters, and only for small holes. Sidewall or shoulder damage means the tyre must be replaced.

Key facts

  • Repair area: repairs are limited to the minor repair area defined in BS AU 159. TyreSafe describes this as the central three-quarters of the tyre. Source: TyreSafe, www.tyresafe.org/tyre-advice/tyre-care-repair/punctures-and-

Why can’t a sidewall puncture be repaired?

The sidewall flexes every time the wheel turns. A repair there cannot take that movement without failing.

The tread, by contrast, is thick and reinforced by the belt. That is why the standard limits repairs to the minor repair area of it. TyreSafe says a puncture close to or on the sidewall means repair is not possible and the tyre may need replacing.

The shoulder, where tread meets sidewall, sits outside the repair area for the same reason. Some web pages quote a different percentage for the zone. Rely on the standard and on the TyreSafe and BTMA wording, and ask the specialist to confirm for your tyre.

What size hole is repairable?

Up to 6mm in diameter, in the repair area of the tread. The BTMA document that sets out the minor repair rules for car and light van tyres gives that limit for penetration damage.

A nail or screw hole is usually well inside it. A tear or a gash is a different matter. Ask the tyre specialist to confirm the limit for your tyre, and note that run-flat tyres are a separate case.

Is a plug on its own legal?

TyreSafe describes repair from the inside with a patch or plug, and only by a tyre specialist to BS AU 159. That means the tyre comes off the wheel and is inspected inside.

A plug pushed in from the outside, with the tyre still on the car, does not let anyone see the inner damage. TyreSafe’s no-repair list includes damage to the casing, bead or liner, which you can only check from the inside. TyreSafe also says permanent repairs can only be carried out after the tyre is removed from the wheel, so it can be inspected inside as well as outside. Can I drive on a flat to the garage?

Only a short distance, slowly. TyreSafe says you may sometimes drive a short distance at low speed to reach a garage or safe place, and should avoid higher speeds or longer than necessary.

The reason is the damage. A tyre driven flat can collapse its sidewall and lose the very structure a repair would need. The tyre that could have been fixed becomes a write-off.

If it is unsafe to move, stop and call for help.

Can a run-flat tyre be repaired?

Sources disagree, so treat a punctured run-flat as a case for inspection. Goodyear says its Run On Flat tyres can be repaired by a professional after inspection. TyreSafe says several associations do not recommend repairing them.

Run-flat tyres are built to be used for 50 miles at a maximum of 50mph with no air. After that, TyreSafe warns that driving on a deflated run-flat stresses the structure and can leave it unsuitable and unsafe to repair. TyreSafe also notes that several associations do not recommend repairing run-flats, because under-inflation is hard to detect.

Check the tyre maker’s guidance for your tyre, and expect replacement unless a specialist tells you otherwise.

Repair versus replace: how to decide

Situation Usual outcome
Small nail hole, repair area of the tread, tyre otherwise sound Repair possible
Internal plug-patch fitted with the tyre off the wheel Repair method TyreSafe describes
Plug pushed in from outside, tyre on the car Not a full repair: the inside is not inspected
Hole larger than 6mm Replace
Puncture near or on shoulder or sidewall Replace
Tread below 1.6mm Replace
Damaged by driving flat Replace
Run-flat that has been driven deflated Usually replace

Replacing becomes the sensible choice whenever the tyre fails any one of those checks.

Where can I get a sidewall or tread puncture checked in Gorton, Manchester?

Manchester roads are tough on tyres. Potholes, kerb strikes and roadworks debris all raise the risk of a puncture or sidewall damage.

Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres at 270 Hyde Road, Gorton, M12 5FH, is open Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:30 and Saturday 9:00 to 16:30, and closed on Sunday. Ring 0161 274 3125 and describe the damage, because the tyre has to come off the wheel and be inspected inside before anyone can promise a repair. Our tyre repair service in Manchester page has the service details.

If the damage is in the tread, what does a repair cost?

If the damage is in the tread and repairable, the next question is price: see how much a puncture repair costs. For run-flat tyres in detail, read run-flat tyres: can they be repaired and must you replace in pairs.

Frequently asked questions

Can I repair a puncture myself?

No. TyreSafe says car tyre repairs must be carried out by a tyre specialist to BS AU 159. A DIY sealant or external plug does not let anyone inspect the inner liner and casing. A tyre repaired that way may still need replacing.

How long does a puncture repair last?

A repair that meets the British standard, made in the permitted area on a sound tyre, is intended to be permanent. Previous repairs that are not in line with British standards are a reason a tyre cannot be repaired. Source: https://www.tyresafe.org/tyre-advice/tyre-care-repair/punctures-and-puncture-repairs/

Why does my tyre keep losing air with no obvious puncture?

TyreSafe says slow punctures are most often caused by sharp objects piercing the tyre, but can also come from potholes or kerbs damaging the sidewall or wheel rim, or from a valve whose cap does not seal or is missing. Have the wheel and valve checked as well as the tyre.

Does a repaired tyre pass the MOT?

The MOT fails tyres with exposed cord, bulges or tread below the limit. The tyre section we read sets no separate pass or fail rule for a repaired tyre, so the usual tyre tests apply. See the MOT manual, https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles/5-axles-wheels-tyres-and-suspension

Is a puncture in Gorton, M12, handled any differently?

No. The same BS AU 159 rules apply anywhere in the UK. Hyde Road in Gorton is a street in east Manchester, not the town of Hyde, so use the postcode M12 5FH when you search for a local shop.
