Prices change: these figures were read from the chains’ own pages in October 2026 and may change.
What does a puncture repair include?
At both chains the quoted price includes a valve and a balance. one national chain adds fitting. Ask any garage the same question: is the valve, the balance and the refit in the figure? A low headline price that leaves out the balance or the valve is not the same offer as a price that includes both.
Is a repair cheaper than a new tyre?
Often, if the tyre qualifies, because a repair charge covers one small job rather than a new tyre. But the tyre has to be repairable, and TyreSafe is clear that damage on or near the sidewall rules a repair out, so the tyre may need replacing.
When can’t a tyre be repaired?
Do not budget for a repair if either of these applies, because a replacement is needed instead:
-
damage on the sidewall or shoulder, outside the central three-quarters
-
a poor previous repair (one national chain lists faulty or poor previous repairs)
-
a tyre driven flat for some distance

What about run-flat tyres?
one national chain says it cannot repair run-flat tyres, because a punctured run-flat may have been driven on and the structure can be damaged without showing. TyreSafe says several associations do not recommend repairing a run-flat. Ask the garage for its policy before you expect a repair price, and have the tyre looked at before you drive any distance on it.
Patch, plug or plug-patch?
TyreSafe says a permanent repair needs the tyre off the wheel for an internal and external inspection. That rules out a quick fix from outside only. If a slow puncture can be repaired, TyreSafe says it is usually fixed with a patch or plug from the inside, or by replacing a damaged valve.
| Repair from inside, tyre off the wheel | Outside-only fix | |
|---|---|---|
| Internal inspection | Yes | No |
| Matches TyreSafe guidance | Yes | No |
