Run-Flat Tyres: Can They Be Repaired and Must You Replace in Pairs?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

It depends on the tyre maker and on what happened to the tyre. Goodyear says its Run On Flat tyres can be repaired by a qualified professional after a thorough inspection and analysis of the tyre history. TyreSafe says several associations do not recommend repair, because under-inflation is hard to detect. Some tyre retailers therefore replace a punctured run-flat rather than repair it.

Key facts

  • Goodyear’s limits: one repair in the tyre’s lifetime; no repair after shoulder damage, or after driving at low or zero pressure for a substantial distance. Source: same page.

What is a run-flat tyre?

A run-flat, or self-supporting run-flat, is designed to give a limited run-on period after a puncture. TyreSafe says tyres marked RF can run without air for at least 50 miles at up to 50 mph. That is enough to reach a safe place or a garage, not to carry on with your journey.

Can a run-flat be repaired?

The sources conflict, and the safest reading is to follow the tyre maker and the garage. Goodyear allows repair of its own Run On Flat tyres after inspection and a check of the tyre’s history. Other tyre retailers refuse, because a punctured run-flat may have been driven on for too long or too fast and the strong sidewall can mask damage.

TyreSafe says driving on a deflated run-flat stresses the structure and can leave it unsafe to repair, and that several associations do not recommend repair.

Do I have to replace run-flats in pairs?

None of the pages we checked says pairs are required. What they do stress is matching. TyreSafe says it is preferable to have the same tread pattern on each axle. The MOT manual lists “tyres on the same axle of different structure” as a major defect. When one tyre is replaced, ask the fitter whether the tyre on the same axle is close enough in wear and type to match.

Can I fit normal tyres instead of run-flats?

TyreSafe strongly recommends not mixing conventional and run-flat tyres on the same vehicle, and says a working pressure monitoring system is essential with run-flats. The MOT manual says the two can be mixed on the same axle, although this is not recommended. Source: GOV.UK, www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passen. Check your handbook and ask the fitter before changing type.

Run-flat or conventional?

Run-flat Conventional
After a puncture Limited run-on: at least 50 miles at up to 50 mph Not designed to be driven on flat
Repair Maker-dependent; some retailers refuse Possible in the central three-quarters of the tread
Pressure monitoring Operational system essential Not part of the run-flat guidance cited here

What should I do after a run-flat puncture?

Slow down, keep within 50 mph and 50 miles, and get the tyre looked at. Note roughly how far and how fast you drove, because that history affects whether any repair is even considered.
