Interim or Full Service: Which Does Your Car Need?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

An interim service is commonly recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles, and a full service every 12 months or 12,000 miles, whichever comes first. Your car’s handbook is the final word. If you drive a lot or mostly short trips, an interim in between full services can make sense; if you do few miles, a full service once a year is the usual pattern.

What does an interim service cover?

An interim is the lighter visit. The AA says all services check lights, brakes, tyres, steering, suspension and fluid levels, and an interim might also include an oil change, oil filter replacement and a drive belt inspection. It suits drivers who cover high mileage and want the basics checked between full services.

What does a full service cover?

A full service adds to the interim list. The AA names items such as air cleaner replacement, a diesel fuel filter, hose inspections, a handbrake shoe inspection and wheel rotation. The RAC adds seat belt and airbag system testing. The scope differs by garage and by car, so ask what is on the sheet before you book.

Interim, full or MOT?

These are three different jobs.

Interim service Full service MOT
Purpose Basic maintenance Thorough maintenance Legal roadworthiness check
Typical timing 6 months or 6,000 miles 12 months or 12,000 miles When your MOT is due
Covers engine oil and filter? Yes Yes (part of the longer list) No: engine, clutch and gearbox condition are not covered

GOV.UK states the MOT does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. A car can pass the MOT and still need a service.

Which should I choose?

Start with the handbook, because it sets the intervals for your car. Then think about use:

  • Under about 6,000 miles a year: a full service every 12 months usually covers it.

  • High mileage: the 6,000-mile interim in between helps.

  • Mostly short trips: age the oil sooner, not later. Our engine oil guide explains why.

What does a service cost?

The AA gives guide prices of about £75 to £125 for an interim and £150 or more for a full service. The RAC puts a full service at £170 to £210 for a small car and £210 to £300 for a medium car, with an interim usually a third to half the price of a full service. Prices vary with the car, the engine and the garage, so treat these as a guide only. Ask any garage for a written quote that lists what is included.

Does servicing affect my warranty?

The Motor Ombudsman lists “not following the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended servicing schedule/intervals” as a way to invalidate a claim. Read your own warranty terms to see what they require, and keep the paperwork for any service.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between an interim and a full service?

An interim is less extensive. A full service is more thorough, with up to 80 checks according to the AA, and adds items such as an air cleaner replacement.

How often should I service my car?

Follow the handbook. As a guide, the AA gives 6 months or 6,000 miles for an interim and 12 months or 12,000 miles for a full service.

Is an MOT the same as a service?

No. GOV.UK says the MOT is not a service and does not check the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Will an independent service void my warranty?

Check your own warranty terms for what they require, and keep a record of the work.

Is £300 a lot for a car service?

The RAC puts a full service at £210 to £300 for a medium car, so £300 sits at the top of that range. Cars and engines differ, so ask for an itemised quote.
