How often should I change my oil?
Use the handbook interval for your engine, and the 12-month limit if you do few miles. If the handbook gives two figures, a mileage and a time, the earlier one is your deadline. The figures above are guides, not rules. Castrol calls the old 3,000-mile rule outdated.
Does oil type change the interval?
Yes. Castrol says synthetic “earns the longer intervals”, and the RAC says the interval depends on the type of oil and driving conditions. Use the oil grade and interval your handbook specifies.
Do short urban trips change it?
Yes. Castrol says frequent short trips fall under what manufacturers call severe service, because the engine rarely reaches full operating temperature. It suggests tightening the interval to around 5,000 miles. Stop-and-go traffic and towing are also common reasons to change more often. Manchester commuting is often stop-start, so check whether your handbook gives a severe service schedule.
How do I check my oil?
Use the dipstick to check the level and condition. Oil that is dark, thick or gritty should be changed. Your handbook explains the correct way to read the dipstick for your engine.
Oil change or full service?
An oil change replaces the oil and usually the filter. A service covers far more. The AA says all services check lights, brakes, tyres, steering, suspension and fluid levels, and an interim might also include an oil change and oil filter replacement (https://www.theaa.com/driving-advice/service-repair/car-servicing-complete-guide).
| Oil change | Service | |
|---|---|---|
| Covers | Oil, usually the filter | Oil and filter plus a wider set of checks |
| When | By handbook mileage or 12 months | By handbook schedule |
Do I need an oil change between services?
If you do high mileage, short journeys or heavy towing, the handbook’s severe service schedule may call for one. If the oil looks dark, thick or gritty, change it. Otherwise follow the schedule.
