Why Does a Car Battery Die in Winter and How Long Does It Last?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

Cold reduces what a battery can deliver, so a weak or old battery fails first on a frosty morning. Car batteries generally last between 3 and 5 years, according to the RAC. If yours is in that range and starting is slow, get it tested before winter sets in.

Key facts

Why does cold kill car batteries?

A battery works by chemical reaction, and cold slows it. Varta says the chemistry slows below 20°C: the reaction at 10°C falls to 50% and at freezing is as low as 25%. At the same time, a cold engine needs more energy to turn over. Yuasa also notes that heated seats, windows and lights increase demand on the alternator, which reduces its ability to recharge the battery.

Varta adds that heat damage builds up over summer without showing, which is why many failures only appear in winter.

What are the signs of a failing battery?

The RAC lists dimming lights, slow starting, a battery warning light and malfunctioning electrics. A slow, labouring crank on a cold morning is the classic early warning. If you notice it, do not wait for the car to fail to start.

Can I jump-start it?

Jump-starting is generally safe if carried out correctly, says the RAC, but it warns that doing it wrongly can cause electrical surges that damage the car’s electronics and the battery. Repeated jump starts can damage batteries over time because the car is not given time to charge. If you are not confident, call a garage or breakdown provider.

Should I get it tested?

Yes, if the battery is more than a few years old or starting has become slow. Yuasa recommends a test at a local workshop before the cold months set in. A test shows whether the battery holds its charge.

Weak battery or alternator fault?

A battery that is simply old loses its ability to start the car. An alternator fault means the battery is not being recharged while driving. The Highway Code says a charge warning light on while driving may mean the battery is not charging.

Weak battery Alternator or charging fault
Typical clue Slow start, then runs normally Charge warning light while driving
Check Battery test Charging system check
Fix Charge or replace Repair the charging system

Do stop-start cars need a different battery?

Cars with stop-start systems may need a specific battery type. Check your handbook and ask the fitter to confirm the right one for your car.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a car battery last?

Generally 3 to 5 years, according to the RAC.

Why does my car struggle to start in the cold?

Cold slows the battery's chemistry. Yuasa says cranking power can fall by about 30% at 0°C.

Is cold or heat worse for a battery?

Varta says heat does the damage; cold exposes it when starting needs more energy.

Is jump-starting safe?

Generally, if done correctly. Done wrongly it can damage the car's electronics and the battery.

When should I get the battery tested?

Before the cold months, as Yuasa advises, or as soon as starting turns slow.
