Test result: at 5°C, RAC, quoting TyreSafe testing, lists summer tyres at 70.5m and winter tyres at 65.7m stopping distance. At 20°C the order reverses (65.3m summer, 67m winter). Source: same RAC page.

Do I need winter tyres in Manchester?
Not by law, and not every driver. The case for winter tyres is about temperature rather than snow. When the air drops below 7°C, standard tyres begin to lose grip, even on wet roads with no ice in sight.
Check how often your own commute runs below that temperature, particularly on early mornings and evenings. TyreSafe highlights commuters and business drivers as the ones most exposed. This guide does not give a Manchester average temperature, because we have not cited a Met Office figure for it.
How are winter tyres different from normal tyres?
Two things: the compound and the tread.
The compound contains more natural rubber and advanced silica, which minimises the hardening effect and keeps grip in cold, damp conditions. The tread has multi-sipe patterns, with many fine cuts that help the tyre bite.
The result is shorter stopping in the cold. In BTMA testing cited by TyreSafe, a car braking at 60mph on a wet road at 5°C stopped five metres shorter, more than a car length.
Are all-season tyres enough?
For mild winters, often yes. Continental says all-season tyres are developed to perform all year in moderate climates, with reliable grip in rain, wet and mild winter conditions. It adds that they do not have the same winter-specific features as winter tyres, so harsh-weather performance is not as good. Source: www.continental-tyres.co.uk/tyre-knowledge/winter-vs-all-sea
Continental also notes that drivers who use the car only occasionally, for short urban trips, may find swapping tyres twice a year not worth the cost and effort. The deciding factors are where you live, how low temperatures drop and how much you drive.
Read the sidewall. The RAC lists both the M+S symbol and the three-peak mountain snowflake (3PMSF) symbol as sidewall markings. A tyre with 3PMSF has passed winter traction tests; M+S is a lower standard. Source: Nokian Tyres, na.nokiantyres.com/tips/choosing-your-tires/3pmsf-and-ms-tir
Winter tyres versus all-season tyres: the contrast
| Summer or normal tyre | All-season tyre | Winter tyre | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Below 7°C | Compound begins to harden | Compromise | Compound resists hardening |
| Mild, wet winters | Adequate if tread is good | Designed for it | Designed for it |
| Harsh cold or snow | Weakest | Not as good as winter tyres | Best |
| Warm months | Best | Works all year | Not for summer use |
The honest trade-off is cost and storage. Winter tyres need a second set or a swap with the seasons. All-season tyres avoid that but give up some cold-weather performance.
Are winter tyres legal in the UK, and do they affect insurance?
Winter tyres are legal. They are not mandatory. The tread rule applies in every season: 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread, around the whole circumference. See the legal tyre tread depth.
The RAC says fitting winter tyres should not affect your car insurance but it is worth double checking with your provider.
Should I fit all four winter tyres?
TyreSafe’s page does not say. Michelin says winter tyres should always be fitted as a full set of four, for even grip and predictable handling. Source: www.michelinman.com/auto/auto-tips-and-advice/tire-buying-gu
Ask the fitter what suits your car.
What else should I check before winter?
TyreSafe advises regular checks through winter.
-
Tread well above 1.6mm.
-
Pressures monthly and before long journeys, checked cold (less than 2 miles travelled).
-
A visual check for cuts, cracks and bulges, and removal of any embedded objects.
Cold air lowers pressure, so check more often as temperatures drop. Continental says pressure falls by about 0.07 to 0.14 bar (1 to 2 PSI) for every 10°C drop. Source: www.continental-tires.com/tire-knowledge/tire-pressure-in-wi
What should drivers in Gorton and east Manchester do before winter?
Cold, damp roads look no different from wet roads in warmer months, so drivers often fail to adjust. That is the risk on a damp Manchester morning.
Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres in Gorton, M12 5FH, is listed on the Falken Tyres Network and is open Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:30 and Saturday 9:00 to 16:30, closed on Sunday. This guide does not say which winter or all-season tyres are in stock. For the winter service page, see winter car maintenance in Manchester.

Frequently asked questions
At what temperature do I need winter tyres?
TyreSafe says that below 7°C the compound in normal tyres begins to harden, reducing grip. The RAC puts the same threshold at seven degrees. Winter tyres are designed to resist this and are the safest option from October to March.
Do winter tyres only help in snow?
No. In the TyreSafe test the RAC quotes, winter tyres stopped in 65.7m against 70.5m for summer tyres at 5°C, on a cold road without snow. On snow the gap widens considerably, according to the RAC.
Can I use winter tyres all year?
Continental says winter tyres should not be used in summer. TyreSafe recommends them for October to March. In the RAC-quoted test at 20°C, winter tyres stopped in 67m against 65.3m for summer tyres.
Are winter tyres legal in the UK?
Yes, and they are not mandatory. The same tread rule applies as for other tyres: at least 1.6mm across the central three-quarters. Check the load index and size match your car.
Are all-season tyres a good alternative in Manchester?
For moderate climates, Continental says yes: all-season tyres give reliable grip in wet and mild winter conditions. In harsh cold or snow, winter tyres perform better. Decide by how often you drive in sub-7°C conditions.
How do I know my tyres are ready for winter?
Check tread, pressure and condition, as TyreSafe advises. Replace tyres nearing the 3mm advice figure before the cold sets in. Source: https://www.tyresafe.org/the-checks/
