What Does an MOT Check on a Car?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

An MOT checks the parts of a car that affect road safety and emissions: brakes, steering, suspension, lights, tyres and wheels, seatbelts, exhaust, mirrors, wipers and windscreen. It does not test the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox, and it is not a service.

Key facts

  • Not covered: the condition of the engine, clutch and gearbox. Source: DVSA, www.gov.uk/government/publications/car-parts-checked-at-an-m

  • Brakes: condition, operation and performance, plus ABS and ESC where fitted. Source: same DVSA page.

  • Tyres and wheels: condition, security, size and type, and tread depth; spare wheels and tyres are not inspected. Source: same DVSA page.

  • Tyre pressure monitoring: the warning light is checked on vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012. Source: same DVSA page.

  • Warning lights: lights for airbags, seatbelt pretensioners, ABS, ESC, electronic park brake, brake fluid and power steering are checked. Source: same DVSA page.

What parts of the car are tested in an MOT?

DVSA lists 21 areas for a car. The main ones:

  • Body and structure: free from excessive corrosion or damage in specific areas, with no sharp edges likely to cause injury

  • Fuel system: no leaks, secure pipes, and a fuel cap that seals

  • Exhaust: emissions, and a system that is secure, complete and not too noisy

  • Seatbelts and seats: in place, in good condition, working and securely attached

  • Doors, mirrors, bonnet and boot: secure and working

  • Brakes: efficiency test, condition, ABS and ESC

  • Tyres and wheels: condition, tread and security

  • Lights and number plates: condition, operation and headlamp aim

  • Wipers, washers and windscreen: a clear view of the road

  • Steering and suspension: condition and correct operation

  • Horn, VIN and electrical wiring and battery: working and visible condition

Each area has pass and fail rules in the MOT inspection manual.

What is not checked in an MOT?

The engine, clutch and gearbox condition. DVSA states this directly. The spare wheel and tyre are also not inspected.

So a car can pass its MOT and still need major mechanical work. An MOT is a safety and emissions snapshot, not a health report.

Is an MOT the same as a service?

No. DVSA says the MOT “isn’t the same as having your vehicle serviced”. A service is routine maintenance, such as oil and filter changes, based on the manufacturer’s schedule. The MOT is a legal check on specific items.

MOT Service
Purpose Legal roadworthiness check Maintenance
Engine condition Not covered Usually covered
Frequency Yearly after year three Per manufacturer or mileage
Outcome Pass or fail Work done and recorded

A garage can do both on one visit, but they remain separate jobs.

Does a dashboard warning light fail the MOT?

Some do. DVSA says the MOT checks the warning lights for airbags, seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters, ABS, electronic stability control, the electronic park brake, brake fluid and power steering.

For vehicles first used on or after 1 January 2012, the tyre pressure monitoring warning light must also work. The MOT manual treats a tyre pressure monitoring system that is obviously not working as a major defect.

Any warning light that stays on is worth a look before the test. Get it diagnosed rather than hoping it passes.

How long does an MOT take, and do I need to book?

The official sources used here give no test duration, so ask the garage when you book and ask whether you can wait.

Ring ahead to check slots. The MOT page for the Gorton garage asks drivers to ring first.

What does an MOT mean for drivers in Gorton and east Manchester?

Local roads add wear that the MOT picks up: suspension bushes, tyres and wheel damage from potholes, and brake wear from stop-start traffic. Drivers in M12 and M18 will find several test stations within a short drive.

Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres is an MOT station at 270 Hyde Road, Gorton, M12 5FH. To book or ask questions, see our MOT service in Manchester or ring 0161 274 3125. Hours are Monday to Friday 9:00 to 17:30 and Saturday 9:00 to 16:30, closed on Sunday.

Frequently asked questions

Does the MOT test the engine?

No. DVSA says the MOT does not cover the condition of the engine, clutch or gearbox. It does cover exhaust emissions, which relate to the engine's output. A mechanical problem can exist even if the car passes.

Is the MOT a service?

No. The MOT is a legal check on specific safety and emissions items. A service is routine maintenance. If you want the engine looked at, ask for a service or health check as well.

Are my tyres checked in an MOT?

Yes. DVSA lists condition, security, size and type, and tread depth. The legal minimum for cars is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread. The spare is not inspected.

Will a cracked windscreen fail the MOT?

The MOT checks the windscreen for condition and the driver's view of the road. Damage in the driver's line of sight can fail. The MOT manual flags damage in windscreen zone A (the driver's view) of more than 10mm in diameter, and damage elsewhere in the wiper-swept area of more than 40mm. Does the MOT check the battery?

DVSA lists the visible electrical wiring and the battery as checked for condition. It does not say that the battery's charge or health is tested.
