What is the maximum MOT fee in the UK?

For a Class 4 car, the maximum is £54.85. GOV.UK sets it, and the page was last updated on 9 September 2026.

The same table lists motorcycles up to and over 200cc, with a standard motorcycle at £29.65. The cap is a ceiling, not a price list. A test station may set any fee at or below it.

How much will the MOT cost in 2026?

For a car, no more than £54.85. That is the maximum GOV.UK lists for 2026, and the amount you pay is whatever the garage charges up to it.

Online comparison sites publish averages, which sit below the cap. An average is not a quote. The price that counts is the one the garage gives you.

Why do some garages charge less than the cap?

The cap is a limit, so competition can pull the price down. Garages may discount the test to bring in other work, or because their costs are low.

A low price is not automatically a warning sign, but compare what you get. Ask whether the fee includes a retest and whether the garage will report problems clearly. The test itself is the same standard everywhere.

This page does not print a Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres MOT price, because listing sites can show out-of-date figures. Ring 0161 274 3125 for today’s price.

Is the MOT retest free?

Sometimes. GOV.UK sets out two cases.

  1. Left for repair: if you leave the vehicle at the test centre for repair and it is retested within 10 working days, there is no fee for the partial retest.
  2. Next working day: if you take it back to the same centre before the end of the next working day, there is no fee for a partial retest on a defined list of items, including lamps, wipers and washers, mirrors, seatbelts, tyre pressure monitoring and wheels and tyres.

If you take the vehicle away for repair and return within 10 working days, a partial retest fee may apply. In every other case you need a full retest and pay the full fee again.

Is the MOT fee different for a motorcycle or a van?

Yes. The fee depends on vehicle class. GOV.UK lists a standard motorcycle at £29.65 and one with a sidecar at £37.80. Light goods vehicles up to 3,000kg share the car cap of £54.85 according to the fee table. Petrol, diesel and hybrid goods vehicles over 3,000kg up to 3,500kg (class 7) are capped at £58.60. Check the class of your vehicle before you book, and ask the garage to confirm it tests that class when you ring.

What happens if the car fails the MOT?

The fee does not change the standard. A vehicle fails if the result lists “dangerous” or “major” problems, and GOV.UK says you may not be allowed to drive until they are fixed. “Minor” and “advisory” items are for monitoring.

You can take the vehicle away only if your MOT is still valid and no dangerous problems are listed. See why cars fail the MOT for the usual causes.

Cheap MOT versus full-detail MOT: the contrast

A cheap MOT with a thin report can cost more later. A full MOT with clear notes helps you plan repairs. An MOT is also not a service: it checks legal safety and emissions items, not the engine, clutch or gearbox.

Low headline fee Fee near the cap
What you get Test and certificate Same test; check what else is included
What to ask Is a retest included? Is a retest included?
Key risk Unclear defect notes Paying more for the same test

The test is the same. The difference lies in service and communication.

How much does an MOT cost in Gorton, M12 or M18?

The cap is the same everywhere: £54.85 for a car. What differs is the garage’s own price and the postcode. AI answers and maps often treat “Gorton” as the M18 cluster of stations, but this garage is at 270 Hyde Road, Gorton, M12 5FH.

Drivers in M12 and M18 will see a wide spread of prices. Price is only one part of the decision. Convenience and trust matter as much, especially when a fail means repairs. We are closed on Sundays, so book a weekday or Saturday: ring ahead on 0161 274 3125, or see our MOT service in Manchester.

What is the next question after the price?

Price settled, the next question is when you can come in: see MOT on a Saturday or Sunday in Gorton.

Frequently asked questions

Can a garage charge more than £54.85 for a car MOT?

No. £54.85 is the maximum fee GOV.UK sets for a Class 4 car. A garage can charge less. Other work, such as repairs after a fail, is priced separately from the test fee.

Do all garages charge the same for an MOT?

No. The cap is the same, but each garage sets its own fee up to it. Compare quotes by phone, and ask what is included, such as a retest. Listing sites often show averages or out-of-date prices.

Is an MOT included with a service?

No, the two are different jobs. The MOT checks that important items meet legal standards. It is not a service and does not cover the engine, clutch or gearbox. A garage may offer both together. Ask what the quote covers.

Do I pay again if my car fails?

Not always. A partial retest within 10 working days after you leave the car for repair at the test centre has no fee. In other cases a partial retest fee or the full fee may apply. See the GOV.UK retests page.

How much is a motorbike MOT?

The cap is £29.65 for a standard motorcycle and £37.80 with a sidecar. Not every garage tests motorcycles, so check before you book.

When do I need my first MOT?

By the third anniversary of registration for cars. Some vehicles need testing at one year old; GOV.UK points to its fees table to show which.
