How Early Can You Get an MOT and Keep the Date?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

You can get an MOT up to a month minus a day before your current one runs out and keep the same renewal date. Test any earlier and the new expiry is set one year minus a day from the test. Driving without a valid MOT can cost up to £1,000.

How early can I MOT my car and keep the renewal date?

A month minus a day. GOV.UK’s example: if your MOT runs out on 15 May, the earliest date that keeps next year’s renewal date is 16 April.

Count back one calendar month from the expiry date, then add a day. Your next MOT stays due on the same date the following year.

You can find your expiry date on your current certificate, or on the GOV.UK MOT history check. You can also sign up for a reminder.

What is a worked example for a 2026 expiry date?

Say your MOT runs out on 30 November 2026. Count back one month to 30 October, then add a day: the earliest test that keeps your renewal date is 31 October 2026. Pass on or after that date and your next MOT stays due on 30 November 2027.

Now say you test earlier, on 20 October 2026, and pass. The renewal date changes to one year minus a day from the test, so the new expiry is 19 October 2027. You lose the days between 20 October and 30 November.

What happens if I test it even earlier than the window?

The renewal date moves. GOV.UK’s example: if your MOT runs out on 15 May and you test on 14 April and pass, the new expiry becomes 13 April the following year.

You lose the days between the test and the old expiry date. Testing a day or two outside the window costs you very little, but testing weeks early can cost you weeks of cover.

Early window versus late: the contrast

When you test Result for next year’s date
Within one month minus a day before expiry Keeps the same renewal date
Earlier than that Resets to one year minus a day from the test date
After expiry You cannot drive on the road except to a pre-arranged test or repair

If in doubt, book inside the window.

What if my MOT has already run out?

You cannot drive or park the vehicle on the road, and can be prosecuted. GOV.UK says the only exceptions are driving it to or from somewhere to be repaired, or to a pre-arranged MOT test.

If your tax is due to run out, you can register the vehicle as off the road (SORN). You cannot renew vehicle tax while the MOT is expired. Tax the vehicle once it has passed.

Is a car without an MOT legal on the way to a booked test?

Only to a pre-arranged test. GOV.UK says you may drive to a pre-arranged MOT test or to and from somewhere to be repaired. The vehicle still has to meet the minimum standards of roadworthiness at all times.

Keep proof of the booking in case you are stopped.

Is my insurance valid without an MOT?

The GOV.UK pages read for this guide do not state the insurance position, so we have not written one. Check your policy wording or ask your insurer. GOV.UK says you can be fined up to £1,000 for driving without a valid MOT, with the exception of driving to a pre-arranged MOT test. Source: www.gov.uk/getting-an-mot/when-to-get-an-mot

What if my MOT expires on a weekend or bank holiday?

GOV.UK does not give a special rule for weekends in the pages read. The expiry date is the date printed on the certificate, and the test must happen by then. Book a weekday or Saturday test well inside the window to avoid the issue.
