How Much Does Wheel Alignment Cost in the UK?

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

Published UK figures run from about £50 for a front-axle alignment to around £80 to £90 for front and rear. The RAC puts front and rear alignment at £80 to £90. The price depends on whether you need two wheels or four set, and whether adjustment is included or charged extra.

Key facts

  • Published averages by job: front axle £50, front and rear £60, full steering geometry £75. Source: published UK averages.

  • Inspection versus adjustment: a quoted price may cover inspection and front toe adjustment only, with rear adjustments extra, so ask what is included.

  • Time: a front alignment could take up to an hour at a reputable garage, a little longer for all four wheels. Source: RAC, same page as above.

  • How often: a check every one to two years is advised, and after new tyres or suspension parts. Source: RAC.

  • Why prices differ: make, model, age and style of vehicle, and how well maintained its components are. Source: RAC.

What does the alignment price cover?

Read the wording before you compare. A price may cover a measurement only, a measurement plus front toe adjustment, or a full set of adjustments on all four wheels. Some garages offer a free check that includes inspection only, with any adjustment charged.

Ask whether you get a printout of the readings before and after. RAC says the owner is issued with a document showing the work carried out.

Two-wheel or four-wheel alignment?

Front-only work adjusts the front wheels. Four-wheel alignment measures all four and can adjust the rear where the car allows it. Published averages step up from £50 (front axle) to £60 (front and rear) to £75 (full steering geometry).

Many UK garages use “tracking” for front-wheel work. See wheel tracking or wheel alignment for the terms.

What makes the price go up?

  • Rear axle adjustment, where the car has it.

  • Seized or damaged adjusters, which need freeing or replacing.

  • Worn steering or suspension parts, which must be fixed before an alignment will hold.

  • Driver-assistance cameras. Cars with driver-assistance cameras may need calibration after alignment, which not every garage offers, so ask when you book.

How long does it take?

RAC says up to an hour for a front alignment, slightly longer for four wheels. Be wary of a much shorter time, RAC adds, because the work needs care.

Check only or full adjustment?

A check tells you whether the angles are out. An adjustment fixes them. The two are priced differently, so ask which one a quoted figure buys.

Check Adjustment
What happens Angles measured Angles set to the maker’s figures
Result A reading A reading plus a correction
Typical charge Lower, sometimes free Higher

Can I do it myself?

Not properly. RAC says alignment needs expensive specialised equipment to be done safely and correctly. A driveway string check cannot match a measuring rig.

How do I compare Manchester quotes?

Ask each garage four questions: front only or all four wheels, whether adjustment is included, whether you get a before-and-after printout, and what extra applies if parts are seized. Then compare the totals.

The RAC cites around £80 to £90 for front and rear. Published averages start at about £50 for the front axle. Prices vary by garage and car.

Is a free alignment check really free?

The check can be. Some free checks cover inspection only, and adjustment is charged.

How long does a wheel alignment take?

Up to an hour for the front wheels, a little longer for all four, according to the RAC.

Do new tyres need an alignment?
