How Much Does Tyre Fitting Cost? What Is Included in the Price

Updated 14 October 2026 · Hyde Road Wheels & Tyres team

Tyre fitting in the UK is normally charged per tyre, and the figure depends on wheel size, tyre type and what is bundled in. Published UK averages put fitting alone at £12 to £20 per tyre, with balancing charged on top. The only number that matters when you compare is the fully fitted price for your tyre and car.

Key facts

  • What changes the price: tyre type and size, the location of the fitting centre, and any extra services.

  • Published fitting averages: £12 for 10 to 15 inch wheels, £14 for 16 to 17 inch, £16 for 18 to 19 inch, £19 for 20 inch and up, £20 for run-flats. Source: published UK averages.

  • Published balancing averages: £8 to £12 by size, £15 for run-flats. Source: the same published averages.

  • Who sets prices: each garage sets its own prices, so published averages are only an indication.

  • Fully fitted: some sellers include all fitting in one price. a fully fitted price means there should be no extras to pay on the day, so check what it covers.

  • TPMS: a tyre pressure monitoring light that is not working is a major MOT defect for cars first used on or after 1 January 2012. Source: GOV.UK MOT manual, www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passen

What does tyre fitting include?

Fitting means taking the old tyre off the wheel, mounting the new one and putting the wheel back on the car. Balancing is a separate job on most price lists. A garage should tell you which parts of the job are in the price before you agree.

Which add-ons change the total?

Four items cause most of the gap between a headline price and the bill.

  1. Balancing. Published averages list it separately, between £8 and £12 for most car wheels.
  2. Valves. Ask whether a new valve is included.
  3. Disposal of the old tyre. Ask whether it is in the price or charged per tyre.
  4. TPMS sensors. Cars with a pressure monitoring system may need sensor work during a tyre change. A fault light can fail an MOT, so ask how the shop handles it.

How does size and tyre type affect the cost?

Larger wheels cost more to fit. Published averages rise from £12 at 10 to 15 inch to £19 at 20 inch and above. Run-flat, 4×4 and van tyres sit higher again at £20, £17 and £17.

For a 16 to 17 inch wheel, the two averages together come to £24 (£14 fitting plus £10 balancing). For 18 to 19 inch they come to £27. These are national indications, not a quote.

Fitting only or buy and fit?

If you bring tyres bought elsewhere, a garage may charge for fitting alone, and some add a surcharge for customer-supplied tyres. Ask before you book. Buying and fitting from one place gives you one price and one point of contact if something is wrong.

Headline price or fitted price?

A headline price is the tyre alone. A fitted price adds labour and the extras above. The two can differ by far more than the fitting charge suggests once valves, disposal and balancing are added.

How do I compare quotes?

Give each garage the same details: tyre size and speed rating, brand, and whether you want run-flat or standard. Then ask for the total with valves, balancing and disposal named. Compare the totals, not the per-tyre fitting line.

How much does it cost to fit one tyre in the UK?

Published UK averages run from £12 to £20 per tyre for fitting, depending on size and type. Balancing is charged on top in its table. Prices vary by garage.

Is balancing included in tyre fitting?

Not always. Ask whether balancing is in the price. Some sellers include everything in a fully fitted price; others list it separately.

Is there a surcharge for fitting tyres I bought online?

Some garages charge one. Ask before you book so the total is clear.

Does wheel size change the fitting price?

Yes. Published averages rise with wheel diameter, and run-flat tyres cost more to fit than standard ones.
